Lux Motive explores the concepts of coadaptation and correlation of emotion and technology, creating an instrumental dialogue between human and machine. Breath is the fuel of our thinking and emotions, therefore our actions. Having been a child diagnosed with sleep apnea at an early age, it was one of the first challenges life has given me to understand that us as human beings don't intuitively breathe as soon as we get delivered to the world, yet we need to learn how to do it first, until then to do it coherently.
Lux Motive is a therapeutic design object, that has a user-responsive kinetic mechanism invoking its user to realise a coherent state of breathing. The cyclical wave movement of the unit attunes from random and erratic to lucid and rhythmic patterns as the breathing behaviour of the user alters. Based on the respiration data received over an interval of 60 seconds by an implemented radar respiration sensor, the system calculates an average of the data to provide its user with an optimal breathing pattern to attune to. After the 60 second interval, the user is expected to adapt their inhales and exhales to the rhythmic movement of the rings from one end to the other.
